Most lumps are not cancer, but the only way to know is to have it looked at rather than watched. A doctor will examine it, usually arrange a scan, and if anything is unclear, take a small sample called a biopsy. A biopsy is the only test that can say what a lump is made of. Nothing about treatment is decided before that, so the first step is simply to get it checked, and quickly if it is growing, hard, or fixed in place.

The expert behind the twin
Dr. Amit Verma is a medical oncologist whose work is in personalised cancer treatment: using a tumour's own biology and genetic tests to choose the treatment most likely to help that person. He trained at AIIMS Delhi and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, holds MRCP (UK) and ESMO certification in medical oncology, and founded the Dr. AV Institute of Personalised Therapy & Research in Gurugram. He has led clinical trials as principal investigator, holds a US patent in cancer therapeutics, and has edited an international journal of molecular oncology.
